To paraphrase John Baldessari, I told people it was art so they believed it was art. Art is anything you say is art. From my perspective, art is each artist’s way of showing you how they view the world. This is why each person’s art is so incredibly different and unique. The individual creative expression a person makes, provides a bridge to inside their mind for the people experiencing it.
Inside my mind, I am a woman who empowers other women. I want to show people the beauty in themselves that they may not see. That their smile lights up the room or that the thing they see as an imperfection is part of who they are and doesn’t need to be a source of insecurity. But I also want them to know that insecurity is okay. Insecurities also make us who we are and embracing them, along with our perfections and imperfections, can be a beautiful journey of self discovery.
Women are beautiful. The interpretation of the word beautiful, however; is quite subjective.  Each woman develops their own understanding of what beauty is and adjusts their own style and image accordingly. In addition to that, they develop their own biases of what is NOT beautiful and also adjust accordingly. No matter the person though, the end goal is to feel confident in your own skin. This becomes difficult when external societal factors warp your understanding of what beauty is and what beauty isn’t.
My short film “Woman” is the inspiration for this book. In my film, I address the experiences of womanhood and the positives and negatives that come from partaking on the journey of womanhood. I planned this book to be an extension of the film but instead, it had a mind of it’s own and took on it’s own meaning and purpose.
